The last resort is reformatting the drive and starting with a new system and a new software install (you know how much a pain in the behind that is, especially on bits of third party software I've happened across over the last few years) - plus I have a bootcamp partition with windows 7 on it and I really don't want to be messing around with that install again. The crash logs seem to state that the new system has been installed but it crashes when trying to migrate the old information - and obviously the damaged extension or whatever. I originally thought it might just be a dodgy extension but I'm at a loss of what it can be. I've installed a new system on an external drive and copied most of what I can from the internal drive. However, it installed enough for the recovery partition to be installed so when I started in safe mode I had to go through the standard El Capitan system set up procedure (Time one, AppleID, iCloud etc). I tried the same resolve this time but what happened was El Capitan downloaded (after 8+ hours and so far I've downloaded it 4 times!!!) and when it then tried to automatically install it came up with a crash report saying that it couldn't be installed. This 15 minute period of operation then reduced to 10 minutes the next time the mac was started then afterwards it would crash out during the last part of the boot up sequence - I've definitely had this before and as mentioned, a clean install sorted it out. I seem to think that I had a similar fan issue before which was something again that I'd downloaded that the system didn't like and was rectified with reinstalling the system rather than a hardware issue. I replaced the fans a few years ago and they made a noise for ages before finally dying so I thought this was a little strange. When I restarted the mac I noticed one of the fans was a Zero RPM whilst the other was at 6000 RPM. I initially thought it was overheating as I've had a summer with the computer switching off when I've maxed out the CPU temperature - usually when downloading a load of content at the same time. I must have downloaded something that the system didn't like as every 15 minutes or so the computer would restart. Was currently up to date with the latest OS X El Capitan (10.11.6) I'm running a 2006 Macbook Pro that had a motherboard replaced a few years ago, so El Capitan had previously been installed and generally working fine for a good 12 months (maybe).ΔΆ00 GB SATA drive with a bootcamp partition
